With the execution of the king and the establishment of France as a republic, the reign of terror began after those years of an absolute monarchy rule. It was a period of cruel suppression and intimidation by those in power. The mastermind of the reign of terror, named Maximilien Robespierre was the most powerful man in France and he was the head of the national convention and the committee of public safety. Only the Jacobins supported him and his plans because he used the terror to execute thousands of people who he viewed as a threat. He wanted to strengthen his hold on power. There were about 2,400-16,000 people who got executed. Meanwhile, the French army had successfully took away the foreign invaders but Robespierre was no longer the ruler. His execution on July 4, 1934 marked the end of the Reign of Terror.
