In 1789 the people from France revolted to abolish the absolute monarchy that paved the way for the establishment of the first French Republic. The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen(La Déclaration des Droits de l’Homme et du Citoyen) was created and written by the National Constituent Assembly, being the first step into developing and writing the constitution on August 26, 1789. The representatives of the French people, also known as the National Assembly, believed that the ignorance or neglect of the rights of man are the main cause of revolts, public calamities and the corruption of government. This declaration, being constantly before the Social body, will be a reminder to them about all their rights and duties. The acts of the legislative power, as well as the rest of the branches, will be monitored to assure the people that they are doing their purposes as respected government leaders. This will help maintain the efficiency of the government body in maintaining a prosperous constitution and attend to the happiness of the majority. The declaration of the rights of man is the fundamental document of the French Revolution. It defines the individual and collective rights of all estates therefore supporting equality. The rights of man are held to be universal: present at all times in all circumstances. This was also inspired by the Enlightenment thinkers. Some of the important aspects that these rights support are equality, liberty, power, security and resistance to oppression.
